Language courses abroad in Chile

Take a Spanish language course in Chile and explore this beautiful country’s diverse landscapes and enjoy delicious Chilean wine and fresh seafood. Defined by its long thin shape, stretching from the driest desert in the world right down to Antarctica, and framed by the Andes Mountains and the Pacific Coast, Chile is a country of breath-taking contrasts.

Chile and surrounds
The capital, Santiago, is located in a valley in the middle of the country. It is a modern and sophisticated metropolis with a thriving contemporary arts scene, fantastic restaurants and museums, and bustling markets. Heading to the coast from here you will find the popular modern coastal city of Viña del Mar and its neighboring city, the bohemian port of Valparaiso. Outside the Central Region, in the North there is the magical Valle del Elqui, where the national drink Pisco (a spirit made from grapes) is produced, the surf town of Iquique, and the desert town of San Pedro de Atacama, where you will be amazed by other-worldly landscapes. In the South, you’ll find the Colchagua Valley, where some of Chile’s best red wines are produced, the lush green landscapes, expansive lakes and volcanoes of the Lake District and, of course, Patagonia, with its rugged landscapes, awe-inspiring glaciers and crystal clear lakes. There are also various Chilean islands, the most famous of which is Easter Island. Located 3,700 km from the mainland, this remote territory is famous for its striking moai statues and unique Polynesian culture.

Local gastronomy
Visitors will find that the locals are generally welcoming and friendly in Chile and that this is a safe country. Chileans are proud of their culture and celebrate their independence from Spain every year in September with traditional activities, food and drinks. Traditional Chilean food includes empanadas (savory pastries with a variety of filling), pastel de choclo (a pie made of corn and mincemeat) and cazuela (a stew made from vegetables, meat and potatoes). However, the most popular meal is an asado (a barbeque), which are usually the centre of long, lazy afternoons with family or friends. In terms of drinks, the Pisco Sour is the favorite cocktail, and you should also try mote con huesillos (a sweet non-alcoholic drink made from wheat and peaches), terremoto (a highly alcoholic drink made of fermented wine, pineapple sorbet and either grenadine or the bitter aromatic spirit fernet), and of course plenty of Chilean wine!

Language
The Chilean accent is distinctive and there are various words and phrases used in Chile that are different from other Spanish speaking countries. At our Chilean partner schools, neutral Spanish is taught during all language courses so you will be able to easily communicate in any Hispanic country. However, you will no doubt enjoy picking up some ‘Chilenismos’, which will help you to better understand Chilean culture. Outside of tourist hotspots, you will find that most local people (especially those aged above 30) cannot speak much, if any, English or other languages. This makes Chile a wonderful destination for your language course abroad as you will constantly have opportunities to practice your Spanish and will be fully immersed in this new language and culture.
